VUI and Ergonomics
Creation of a Voice User Interface and ergonomic analysis of large-format interactive displays.
Context
Large-format interactive displays (iLFDs) are touchscreen panels used in retail, offices, schools, and even homes. However, prolonged use can lead to ergonomic issues like neck, back, and shoulder strain.
To improve usability and reduce physical effort, the project focused on designing a Voice User Interface (VUI) that would allow users to control the system hands-free. Additionally, we adapted key touch interface elements to minimize physical strain and enhance overall comfort during use.
Actions
To better understand the display and its context of use, I led exploratory research including usability testing, ergonomic studies, and benchmarking. These insights supported both my design decisions and helped onboard the team, which was also unfamiliar with this type of device.
Based on the findings, I proposed UX improvements and interface adjustments for the existing system, which were later implemented by the development team.
For the Voice User Interface (VUI), I collaborated closely with the AI developer to define key voice commands, interaction flows, and appropriate feedback mechanisms. We implemented both visual and audio feedback to guide users in successful and error scenarios, ensuring a smooth and accessible experience.
Results
The interface adjustments significantly improved the usability and ergonomics of the iLFD. The VUI was also successfully developed, making command execution more intuitive and accessible.
